The Roji-no-ge

The Roji-no-ge is an eight-line verse chanted when striking the bell. It appears in the Ekottara Agama. On open, roofless ground (roji), Ananda strikes a sounding instrument called the gaṇḍī (kenchi) and calls the monks to the seat of the Dharma. That is the scene in which it was spoken. Why does the bell sound? This verse answers in a few plain words.
