Cucumber blessing across Japan: a directory of temples
The cucumber blessing (kyuri kaji), also called kyuri fūji, has been performed at temples throughout the country around the midsummer doyō period. It is carried on not only at Esoteric Buddhist temples but also as part of local faith and as a seasonal summer custom. In recent years it has also been held at temples in Hawaii.
Here we have gathered into one list the cucumber blessings found across Japan, spanning many Buddhist schools. At Byodoji, we accept requests both for on-site visits and online.
We list temples where the cucumber blessing (kyuri kaji or kyuri fūji) can be confirmed through temple official websites, official blogs, local governments and tourism associations, regional newspapers, and information sent to us by temples and those connected to them. Links are collected in the SNS and official website column.
