Woven from straw grown in Byodoji’s rice fields, each decoration is blessed during goma before delivery.
We also grew black rice, so this year you can choose it for your decoration as well as the usual glutinous rice.
We grew tall sake rice, which yielded long straw and made it easier to make longer shimekazari.
The sea turtle egg on last year's Rinnen has hatched into a baby turtle this year.

Reiwa 9 (2027) is the Year of the Sheep. On this shikishi board, Byodoji’s head priest has painted a large seed syllable “Ban” for Dainichi Nyorai, the guardian Buddha of those born in the Year of the Sheep. Place it in your home for protection throughout the year.
In the rice fields before Byodoji’s gate, we planted rice by hand with parishioners and devotees from across Japan.
Machines damage the straw, so we harvested each bundle by hand. The glutinous rice harvested then is the fukumai that comes with your order.
We soak the straw in sacred water from the Hakusui Well, said to have been discovered by Kobo Daishi.
We twist the straw into rope and shape it into Rinen, 8 and 88. Auspicious cranes and turtles made from handmade mizuhiki cord are added.
About seven months after planting the rice, the decorations were finished entirely by hand, without machines.
We pray that Reiwa 9 will be a fruitful year for you all.
