Highway Bus

From Tokyo Station (overnight) or Shin-Kobe

Get off at Anan Ekimae and transfer to the JR Mugi Line for Aratano Station to continue by public transport.

  • From Aratano Station: about 2.0 km / 30 minutes on foot

From Tokushima Port

Foot passengers can take the local bus from Nankai Ferry-mae to Tokushima Station, then transfer to the JR Mugi Line.

From Tokushima Awaodori Airport

By public transport, take the airport bus to Tokushima Station, then transfer to the JR Mugi Line for Aratano Station. A rental car is simpler if you have substantial luggage.

Walking Pilgrims

If you are walking between temples

  • From Temple 21 Tairyuji: about 13 km / about 4 hours on foot

Useful notes before you come

Parking

Parking is free

Both private cars and pilgrimage buses may use the parking area without charge. On busy ritual days, please follow the local guidance staff.

Steps

There are steps up to the Main Hall

There are steps before and after the gate, and a longer staircase up to the Main Hall. For those who cannot climb comfortably, the five-colored rope linked to the principal image allows symbolic connection from below.

Stamp Office

The stamp office opens separately

The Main Hall may already be open, but the stamp office follows its own hours. If you need stamps or temple items, allow enough time.

Groups

Group visits are smoother with advance contact

If you are coming with around twenty people or more, or you hope for a talk or guided reception, please contact the temple in advance.

Lodging

Temple lodging is closed

Byodoji's temple lodging has been closed since the COVID-19 period, and there are currently no plans to reopen it. If you need nearby accommodation, please contact Minshuku Sazanka directly: 188-1 Akiyama, Aratano-cho, Anan, Tokushima; phone 0884-36-3701.
