July Obon Memorial Service - Third Night
From Sunday, July 12, 2026 at 20:00 JST, Byodoji will hold this Obon memorial service before the Spirit Altar in the temple's inner hall.
This service is one evening of July Obon. It is offered to welcome ancestors and loved ones, make offerings, chant sutras, and dedicate the merit of the service to the departed. This service follows the July Obon calendar observed in Tokyo, Yokohama, and some other areas. Please choose the Obon period that matches your family, home region, or temple tradition.
You may apply even if you cannot return home, visit a grave, or join the livestream at the scheduled time. Please join in prayer from wherever you are.
What We Do In This Service
- A priest reads aloud the entrusted names, posthumous Buddhist names, and memorial intentions.
- Sutra chanting and dedication of merit are offered for ancestors and loved ones.
- First-Obon memorials, remote memorial offerings, and family memorial offerings are accepted.
- When requested, stupa tablets and memorial tablets are enshrined on the Spirit Altar throughout the Obon period.
- Memorial certificates, Obon cards, and other items to be sent after the service are prepared after the memorial offering.
Applications
This ritual accepts memorial offerings only, not prayer requests. We receive the names, posthumous names, and memorial intentions entrusted to us, read them aloud during the service, and dedicate the merit.
