The Meaning of Shakyo

What Is Shakyo?

Sutra copying is a Buddhist practice in which we copy a scripture by hand, receive the Dharma, make an offering, and settle the mind.

Sutra copying has been passed down as a Buddhist practice for receiving and honoring sacred texts and calming the mind. It is more than transcription or calligraphy.

Many Mahayana sutras repeatedly teach us to uphold, read, copy, and share the teachings with others. The merit of sutra copying belongs to this wider practice.

Modern scholarship likewise understands sutra copying as ritualized transcription accompanied by offerings and dedication, rather than ordinary writing.

Byodoji Online also supports the Heart Sutra. For first-time visitors, however, we recommend beginning with a short text such as the Yakushi name, so the focus can stay on meeting each character quietly rather than writing beautifully.

The Merit of Shakyo

The merit of sutra copying is not a modern self-help idea. Buddhist scriptures have long taught the practices of receiving and upholding, reading and reciting, copying, and sharing the Dharma. Here are several representative passages concerning sutra copying.

功徳 1

Copying and Sharing the Teachings Are Taught as Meritorious

The scriptures speak of copying together with spreading the Dharma, not merely as work done for oneself. This is why sutra copying is understood as both an offering and a practice.

書寫此經流通四方

Copy this sutra and circulate it in all directions

The Fangguang Dazhuangyan Jing teaches that copying the sutra and circulating it in all directions brings the “eight treasuries of merit.”

The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra likewise presents hearing, upholding, reciting, contemplating, copying, and sharing as one continuous practice leading toward buddhahood.

The Perfection of Wisdom sutras repeatedly teach that those devoted to copying and sharing the teachings are protected from calamity and find peace in body and mind.

身常安隱心恒喜樂

The body is always at ease, and the mind is ever joyful

In the scriptures, sutra copying is a practice of receiving the Dharma and holding fast to it, rather than a modern method of self-care.

Peace of body and mind and protection from hardship are taught as its fruits. Even when copying on a screen today, its merit rests in attending carefully to the words.

Even a Short Buddha Name Opens a Practice of Praying for Peace and the Removal of Karmic Obstacles

Byodoji Online begins its sutra-copying practice with the name of Bhaiṣajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha. The scriptures also associate upholding and reciting a Buddha’s name with peace in this life and the removal of karmic obstacles.

是人現世安隱遠離諸難。及消滅諸罪。

They will know peace in this life, be freed from hardship, and extinguish karmic offenses

Name-recitation shakyo is not identical to copying a full sutra. Still, in Japanese Buddhist practice, beginning with a short sacred name or phrase is a natural entry point.
