Kyuri Kaji is a secret ritual introduced to Japan by the great monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) to heal diseases, ward off disasters, and suppress evil tendencies.
In the same way that the human body is mostly composed of water, the term 'Kyuri Kaji' refers to sealing one's own illnesses, calamities, and bad habits inside a cucumber and burying it in the ground.
The festival is held every year on the day of the Ox, and this year it was held on July 30, 2023. Byodoji Temple has held the "Cucumber Blessing" since 2020, in which people can participate remotely.
You are welcome to come to the temple, or you can also participate remotely via YouTube or other platforms.
If you want to rid yourself of diseases, if you feel like you've been experiencing a series of misfortunes lately, or if you have long-standing bad habits, seal them in the cucumber and live with a renewed spirit. 🙏
