Dosha Kaji (Sand Blessing with the Mantra of Light)

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. (JST), the Dosha Kaji ceremony will be performed in the main hall of Byōdō-ji, Temple No. 22 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, and streamed live.

Byōdō-kō is a Shikoku pilgrimage group organized by Byōdō-ji. On this day, to coincide with the group's visit to Byōdō-ji, the Dosha Kaji ceremony will be performed as a special occasion.

Dosha Kaji is a ceremony in which sand is blessed through the recitation of the Mantra of Light (Kōmyō Shingon). It is taught that when this blessed sand is scattered over the remains or the grave of the deceased, its power brings them to rebirth in the Pure Land of Bliss.

Translation

Bless sand 108 times with this mantra, and scatter it at the burial ground over the remains of the deceased or over their grave. Wherever the deceased may be, in the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, asuras, or animals, through the power of the sand blessed by the Mantra of the Light of Great Consecration (the Mantra of Light), the light at once reaches them and the karmic consequences of their wrongdoing are removed. Leaving behind their body of suffering, they are reborn in the Pure Land of Bliss in the west and will not fall back into the realms of delusion until they attain awakening.
